Maintaining a High Calorie Diet

Since maintaining weight is an important goal for patients diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disorders the recommend diet is to consume foods that are high in calories. Fruits and Vegetables are often low in calories and protein but are high in vitamins and minerals.

Don’t want to give up fruits & vegetables to make room for higher calorie foods? Here are tips to keep you healthy fruit and vegetables at the same time increase your caloric intake.

Dip fruit into melted chocolate. Choose high-calorie fruits andvegetables, like avocados, canned fruit, coconut, dried fruits, any fruit nectar or 100 percent fruit juice.

Sip a fruit smoothie that includes yogurt, milk or ice cream along with your favorite fruits. Add cream, half-and-half, sour cream, yogurt or whipped cream to sliced fruit. Add raisings or other dried fruit to cereals.

Mix dried fruits with peanut butter and jelly or honey for a dip or sandwich spread. Try vegetables that have been fried, buttered or creamed, or pureed into creamed soups.

Serve cooked vegetables topped with grated or melted cheese. Salads can be calroie dense when they include dressing, cheese, avocados and croutons.

Serve raw vegetables with sour cream or cream cheese and a mayonnaise dip.
