The Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS ALS Research Center at Columbia University
Establishes The Michael & Theresa Beier
MDA Wings Over Wall Street ALS Research Fund

On Wednesday, December 18, 2002 the Department of Neurology and the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Research Center at Columbia University held a reception in honor of Michael and Theresa Beier, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the men and women of the Wall Street Community. Michael Beier, director of equity trading at Credit Suisse First Boston, served as chairman of Wings Over Wall Street Gala this past October, which netted $1.9 million dollars for ALS research. Noted as the single most successful fundraiser hosted by the MDA, with the exception of their annual telethon, these funds will significantly further ALS research at both Columbia University and John Hopkins University.

In recognition of Mr. Beier’s extraordinary commitment and fundraising efforts, Columbia University established The Michael & Theresa Beier / MDA Wings Over Wall Street ALS Research Fund. This fund will be used to further ALS research at the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Research Center under the co-direction of Drs. Hiroshi Mitsumoto and Serge Przedborski.

Columbia University is extremely grateful for the support provided by Wings Over Wall Street, and especially to the event’s founders, Warren Schiffer and Toni Diamond who established the event in 2001. This year Dr. Mitsumoto was awarded the Diamond Award for his outstanding reputation as an expert neurologist in the field of ALS.

The following Columbia faculty members delivered presentations at the day’s event: Dr. Gerald Fischbach, Executive Vice President for Health and Biomedical Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Dr. Timothy A. Pedley, Henry & Lucy Moses Professor of Neurology and chairman, Department of Neurology; Dr. Hiroshi Mitsumoto, Wesley J. Howe Professor of Neurology & medical director of the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Research Center; Dr. Serge Przedborski, professor of neurology and pathology in the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior & scientific director of the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Research Center; Dr. William Dauer, assistant professor of neurology and pharmacology; Dr. Hynek Wichterle, post-doctoral research fellow in the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior; and Dr. Thomas Jessell, professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics in the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior and Howard Hughes Investigator.
