The Forbes Norris Award, considered the highest clinical honor in ALS clinician is given annually to a neurological clinician thought by his/her peers to have shown exceptional compassion and love of humanity in the study, management or support of ALS. This Award, first presented in 1994, was inaugurated by the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations in memory of Dr Forbes (Ted) Norris a neurologist dedicated to helping people with ALS/MND.

Dr. Lewis P. Rowland was honored at the 2001 recipient at the International Alliance of ALS/MND in Oakland, California this past November. Dee Holden Norris, Director of the Forbes Norris ALS Research Foundation recently visited the Center at Columbia to present the award to Dr. Lewis P. Rowland.

Dr. Rowland, founder of the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Center was selected based on his many years of dedication and contribution to the ALS community as a leader in the field, as well as for the establishment of the Center here at Columbia.

This past years award was especially significant in that the ALS Center at Columbia is the first Center to have 2 medical directors who have been recipients of this prestigious honor. Dr. Hiroshi Mitsumoto was the 1998 recipient of the Forbes Norris Award.

This new award, in addition to Dr. Przedborski being named the Sheila Essey recipient in 2002 for the highest ALS scientific merit rounds out the basic science to clinical care achievements we strive for at our Center.
