Robert Basner, MD, Pulmonologist

Dr. Robert C. Basner is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at Columbia University. He has also served on the faculties of Harvard Medicial School and the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Dr. Basner is an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, and received his pulmonary and critical care training at Harvard Medical School. He is a respiratory physiologist and physician who holds American Board of Medicine certifications in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, and Critical Care Medicine, and holds American Sleep Disorders Association certification in Sleep Medicine and polysomnography. Dr. Basner is Director of the Cardiopulmonary Sleep and Ventilatory Disorders Center of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as Director of the Pulmonary Diagnostic Unit. He is co-editor, author, and reviewer for many prestigious textbooks and journals in medicine, including Up To Date, Cecil Textbook of Medicine, the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Applied Physiology, and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He is an internationally recognized authority in the physiology of breathing disorders during sleep, with a specific clinical and research focus in autonomic, cardiovascular, and ventilatory function and treatment related to sleep apnea, hypoventilation disorders including neuromuscular weakness, chronic lung disease, and sleep deprivation. He is a member of numerous National Health Institute study sections in Bioengineering, Physiology, Biomedical Information, and Nanotechnology.
