KATE DALTON, MS, RD
Clinical Research Coordinator


Kate Bednarz, RD Kate has a dual role at the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Research Center in that she provides nutrition counseling and intervention in the clinic and also is a Research Coordinator for the Clinical Trials.

As the nutritionist she is responsible for the assessment and supervision of ALS patients regarding neuromuscular and nutrition issues such as hydration, weight loss prevention, and adequate nutritional intake when modified food texture/consistency is required. She evaluates PEG placement needs and monitors tube feed tolerance.

As the Clinical Research Coordinator she plays an instrumental role in project management and site coordination for multi-center, randomized clinical drug trials. Her responsibilities range from editing protocols; assembling reports for governing agencies including NIH, FDA, and safety monitoring boards; acting as the liaison between participating centers and data management team; regulating subcontracts; generating SPSS data reports and interface with participating sites to resolve data inconsistencies; coordinating site payments and processing invoices; organizing meetings and conference calls; managing IRB submissions; identifying, recruiting, and consenting eligible participants; conducting clinical trial visits as outlined in study protocols and in accordance with Good Clinical Practices guidelines.

Kate obtained her B.S. in dietetics from the University of Maryland, College Park, and her RDE from St. Joseph's College, CT. Her employment at Columbia University Medical Center began in 2002 working with Endocrinology Bone Research. She proceeded to coordinate the CUMC/NYPH “Be Fit to Be'ne'Fit“ wellness program including conducting research regarding obesity awareness. Kate joined the ALS Multidisciplinary team in 2005 and in 2008 she graduated from Columbia University Teachers College with her Master's in Neuroscience.
